Vived

Vived, powered by machine learning algorithms, is a mobile and web application offering a customized articles curated specifically for developers and IT specialists. I was asked to join the Team to help launch web application as well as redesign the entire user interface for better retention. My role was also to explore different ways we could monetise the app, prototype and test design solutions.

Problem Statement

Vived faced challenges due to a lack of clear structure in main feed and lack fo clear direction towards monetizing the platform. An app with articles for IT specialists can be a complex journey towards understanding the specific needs of this target group.

Moreover, the app was experiencing nearly 90% dropoff on a first and second step of onboarding.

Process

Overview

Participating in this project felt like a thrilling, startup-like adventure. Our amazing team of a Product Owner, UX Researcher, two Full-stack Developers, three Machine Learning Engineers, and a Marketing Specialist, collaborated through multiple iterations to enhance the product and introduce new features, such as job offers, for monetizing the platform. Our shared objective was to increase user acquisition and generate revenue from the app.

User Research

To gain deep understanding of our target audience, we conducted user interviews and surveys with developers and IT specialists. We discovered that they desired an article app that is specifically curated for their needs (what we've been working on). Additionally, they expressed interest in having a web version for a more comprehensive reading experience.

Defining Objectives

Based on user research findings, we defined the following objectives:

  • Design a focused and distraction-free reading experience within the app

  • Expand the platform to a web application while maintaining consistency across all platforms (mobile first approach)

  • Introduce a new feature that would allow us to monetize: a job board

Prototyping and Wireframing

Using the gathered insights, I created wireframes to propose a new interface design and information architecture. The wireframes focused on simplifying the reading experience, integrating the new features seamlessly, and ensuring a cohesive flow. I created interactive prototypes to validate the proposed design changes.

Deeper into our tests on prototypes I learnt the following:

  • users have zero interests in new features (job board) - especially if offers are not perfectly matched to their specialty (our algorithms had difficulty distinguishing their interests and main area of expertise while consuming content)

  • users don't really read growth articles and if they do, it's once a week rather than everyday

Result

Increased time spent in the app: Under G4 analytics, interactions with the new feed and individual article views, along with GPT article summaries, increased user engagement in the app, which the previous model and design did not encourage.

User feedback: Users found the new feed structure clearer and easier to navigate, avoiding feeling overwhelmed by the number of available articles. For You and Weekly sections in the bottom navigation bar were reported to meet both user types' needs effectively.

Vived currently has more than 50k+ downloads, with a rating of 4.8/5 based on 150+ reviews.
